Carpet flooring has been used for centuries in different parts of the world due to its numerous good qualities. It is cozy and yet practical thus making it the flooring method of choice for commercial and residential and settings. There is no better feeling than waking up just to step on a soft, warm carpet. Moreover, it enhances the look of you living space with its many styles, designs, textures, and types of construction.

Given that there is a huge influx of carpets in the market of various colors, texture and patterns, selecting the right carpet can become a daunting task. Choosing the carpet that best suit your needs and preferences goes beyond running your fingers across a few samples and selecting your favorite pattern or color. A little research can go a long way in helping you understand what makes a good carpet, how best to install it, what padding to use. Research can also help in alleviating this anxiety and save you some cash while at it. It will also ensure that you won’t be one of those buyers who get duped into believing that the most expensive is always the best. You can get a cheap carpet of good quality and that is durable.

Types of Carpeting for Flooring

Besides finding the colors, textures, and patterns that will complement your house décor, another important thing to consider is the type of the material.

Wool is the best of all fabrics. Although it is softer than most of synthetics and other fabrics (which is a good thing) it is also very durable. However, these benefits make it expensive, costing between $50 and $150 per square yard. Due to the high cost, they accounts for only 1% of carpet sales.

Nylon is suitable alternative for wool because it is not only as durable but also costs much less; about $27 to $45 per square yard. Moreover, the soft, nylon is also stain resistant. Due to its good properties and fair cost, it accounts for 65% of carpet sales. Thus, for those who need a cheap carpet without compromising on quality, nylon is the way to go.

Olefin is suitable for commercial use as well as outdoor and indoor locations, because it is resistant to water and stains, and is durable.

Polyester is popular for being luxuriously thick and soft. It is also cheaper than nylon though it is not as durable.

Acrylic can be easily mistaken for wool in terms of look and texture, however it tends to fuzz. Because it resistant to mild amounts of moisture, it is mainly used in bathroom rugs.

Benefits of Carpeting

First, carpets come in a number of styles, designs and textures which can cater to individual preferences. Cleaning of carpets is pretty easy; all you need do is regular vacuuming. Moreover, since carpets manufactured more recently have a stain-resistant treatment that prevents liquids to seep below the surface, you can clean up spills more easily. It also offers thermal resistance by keeping the house warm in winter. This saves energy and cuts your utility bills for heating.

Just as earlier mentioned, there is no better feeling than getting out of bed to step on a soft, warm carpet. It is really cozy and comfortable to sit on, walk on, and even lie down on. For those who need to sound proof their rooms, carpet is a good flooring choice because it minimizes the sound of TV, conversations, and other noises from within and outside the room.

Disadvantages of Carpeting

Carpets, especially the thick ones absorb moisture and are prone to staining, making cleaning a difficult job. Moreover, they are not long lasting as other flooring options; most of the cheap carpets get damaged more easily. Carpets fibers also hold dust, bugs, dirt and bacteria that can aggravate allergy symptoms especially for people with respiratory condition such as asthma. Pets and carpet are also not a good combination, because once they defecate or urinate on the carpet, it is difficult to eradicate the smell even after cleaning.

Using carpets on your living rooms, stairs or office will make your home or office a more cozy and desirable place to live. If installed and maintained properly, a carpet will keep its durability and beauty for years.
