Hardwood Stair Installation in Greater Indianapolis

Stairs are the first thing a guest sees and the hardest-working surface in the house. Best Flooring designs and builds hardwood staircases across Greater Indianapolis that feel solid underfoot, match the rest of your [flooring](/hardwood-flooring), and hold up to decades of daily use. If carpet is a better fit for part of your home, our [carpeted stairs](/carpet-stairs) page covers that too - we install both and can help you decide room by room.

We handle it in one trip: removing old carpet or treads, leveling the substructure underneath, custom-milling nosings to match your wood, installing treads and risers, and finishing with a low-VOC sealer. One crew, one schedule, one warranty - no subcontractors passing the job around.

Solid vs. engineered hardwood treads - which to pick

Solid oak, maple, and hickory treads are still the standard for staircases. They hold up to years of traffic, and a quality solid tread will easily outlast a 30-year mortgage.

[Engineered](/engineered-hardwood) treads make more sense when you're matching an existing engineered floor, or building over a concrete slab - which describes a lot of the newer construction going up around the metro. They're dimensionally stable, less prone to squeaking, and finish out looking identical to solid wood once they're installed.

  • Red oak, white oak, maple, hickory, walnut - all in stock
  • Custom stains color-matched to your existing floor (free sample boards)
  • Open-end, boxed, curved, and winding staircases
  • Matching nosings milled in-house when the manufacturer doesn't carry one

What the installation process looks like

Day one is demo and prep - we pull out existing carpet, treads, or old flooring, clear the staircase, and shim any loose stringers so nothing squeaks once the new stairs go in. Day two is treads, risers, and nosings, set with construction adhesive and finish nails so there's nothing visible holding it together. Day three is finishing: stain if you want it, three coats of polyurethane, and a final detail pass before we walk it with you.

What the installation process looks like

Pairing your stairs with the rest of your floor

Most homeowners want the staircase to read as part of the [main floor](/hardwood-flooring), not a separate project bolted on afterward. We work from the same stain batch as your hardwood flooring and match the finish sheen so the stairs blend in rather than stand out. If you'd rather go the other direction - dark treads against painted white risers, say - we'll mock that up on a sample board before we order a single piece of wood.

Hardwood stair pricing in Greater Indianapolis

Final price depends on stair count, stringer condition, stain choice, and whether risers are wrapped or painted. We'll quote the full job after a free in-home measure - [request yours here](/free-estimate), or ask about [financing](/financing) if you'd rather spread the cost.

Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions

Yes. We pull the carpet, padding, staples, and tack strip, then check the treads underneath. Solid treads in good shape get leveled and built on top of; particleboard or damaged treads get replaced before we go any further.

A standard 14-stair job runs 2 to 3 days - demo day one, install day two, finishing day three. You can use the stairs the next morning, with a full cure around 7 days out.

That's the goal on nearly every job. We bring stain samples to your home and brush them onto a piece of the same wood species so you're choosing based on the real thing, not a swatch in a brochure.

No more than any other hard surface. We finish with a matte or satin polyurethane rated for low slip, and if you've got pets or young kids in the house, we can add discreet anti-slip strips under the nosing.
